Shortly after the University of Miami's founding 100 years ago, the student body named their yearbook The Ibis, after the elegant, brave bird of marsh legend. The ibis, said in folklore to sense both the start and end of hurricanes as a "leader" of Florida wildlife, soon became the mascot for the university's athletic teams, the Hurricanes.
